OUR MISSION
Welcome!
Birding for Beauty is an organization committed to progressive education around topics of science and its enmeshment with social justice and inclusivity. We believe that birding should be an accessible activity that fosters belonging, community, and inspires people’s passions about conserving the natural world.
Birding for Beauty offers a 12–week curriculum designed for elementary school students in the hopes of empowering youth voices and cultivating within them a love of birding, science, and conservation. In addition, our organization is committed to the belief that learning should be organic and non-hierarchical. Thus, we publish poetry, prose pieces, photography, and art related to science/field work/birding from those in our community. We hope to spotlight youth voices but accept submissions from any age, anywhere in the world.
Ultimately, through our interdisciplinary approach to birding and scientific thought, we seek to expand the scope (no pun intended!) to see beyond the traditional images of birding practice and who are considered birders.
Where
Birding for Beauty is based out of the Atlanta Metro Area in Georgia, United States.
When
We were founded in the early fall of 2024.
Why
Birding for Beauty was founded by Madeleine Moon-Chun after months spent volunteering with elementary school refugee students. She noticed their drive, passion, and compassion for one another. She also noticed the discrepancies and systemic injustices these students face and wanted to show them that birding, while predominantly practiced by a certain demographic, is for everyone. Likewise, social justice work should not be put on the shoulders of the oppressed. It is for everyone to partake in for a better world.
